Price ChopperMarket 32 and Tops have entered a definitive merger agreement. Price Chopper currently operates 163 stores in New York Vermont Connecticut Pennsylvania Massachusetts and New Hampshire while Tops controls 162 stores including five operated by franchisees in New York Pennsylvania and Vermont. The merger joins two storied regional grocery chains that share many of the same markets not to mention a narrative of decades-long growth followed by a recent struggle to keep pace with industry change.

Frank Curci Tops Markets chairman and CEO will become a board member of the newly created company and also serve as a consultant to assist in the transition. With formative roots dating back to the 1920s both Tops Markets and Price ChopperMarket 32 have grown exponentially over the last century building and acquiring stores across Upstate New York and throughout the Northeast. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Of course Tops is a union company while Price Chopper is not. The transaction of the two New York-based grocery chains is expected to close in the coming months.
